A seed or fertilizer metering device comprises a body 22 and a rotary metering member 15 having a fluted portion 45 and a tubular extension 46 non-rotatably mounted on a drive shaft 19, and a cylindrical cut-off element 48 freely rotatably mounted on the extension 46, the shaft 19 being axially movable by means of a handle 71 so as to bring the metering member 15 into an in-use or an out-of-use position, from which latter position the member may be withdrawn from the body in a direction transverse to the said axis. The device is mounted beneath an aperture 18 in a storage hopper. The fluted portion 45 rotating with the shaft 19 meters quantities of material to a seed boot 43 hung on the hooks 41. A locking ring 51 prevents the extension 46 and the cut-off element 48 from moving axially with respect to the shaft 19. A sealing disc 56 axially movable relative to the shaft 19 and fluted portion 45 is rotatably journalled in an aperture 26 in the body 22, a U shaped spring 60 holding the disc in position. When the member 15 is to be moved to the out-ofuse position the lever 71 is operated to move the shaft 19 from right to left (as seen in Figs. 2 and 4). The locking ring 51 and hence the cut-off-element 48 are thus moved to the left, the latter replacing the part of or the whole of the fluted portion 45 which is in the chamber 69. The member 15 may be removed from the body by detaching the spring 60 from the bearing surfaces 65 and extracting the member 15 so that the cylindrical portion 48 passes through the open slot 28 and the shaft 19 through the slot 29. A cut off flap 68 is provided having a cross member 95 supported between the depending side walls 94, A spring control plate 98 is mounted on a shaft 20 and has a spring locator 101 and an abutment face 104 which engages the surface 103 on the flap 68. The flap is adjusted by rotating the shaft 20 and is able, because of the spring 100, to adjust itself in response to the amount or size of material being discharged by the fluted member 45. In an embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), a replacement fluted portion having smaller flutes is described.
