A process for the continuous stuffing-box crimping of continuous thermoplastics filaments or yarns, wherein the material in the form of a filament bundle is guided with the aid of a flow of steam, through an injector nozzle 1 into a stuffing-box crimping chamber 11, is deposited in a stuffing-box 19 in the shape of three-dimensional helical lines, is set in this shape and finally pressed through the stuffing-box 19 by the material subsequently introduced, is characterised in that there is supplied a flow of steam surrounding the material in the injector nozzle, the material being guided through an accelerating conduit 8 the diameter of which corresponds to 2-4.8 times the thickness of the material, the flow of steam and the material being subsequently passed into the stuffing-box chamber 11, the greater part of the flow of steam being drawn off through lateral apertures 25 after travelling along a distance in the stuffing-box chamber 11 corresponding to from 0.5-2 times the diameter of the said chamber 11. The steam is preferably saturated steam, and the remainder of the steam is laterally drawn off shortly before the free end of the stuffing-box 19. To reduce moisture content of the material, hot air at from 100‹C to 150‹C is blown in at the free end of the stuffing-box 19. The stuffing-box and the injector nozzle may be additionally heated. The treated material after bearing the stuffing-box may be deposited in cans or wound. A device for carrying out the above process comprises an injector nozzle 1 having a steam feed conduit 7, an inlet conduit 2 for the material to be treated, a first replaceable insert 27 forming the acceleration conduit 8, a second replaceable insert 12 forming the stuffing-box chamber 11 which is formed on portions of its walls with first steam discharge apertures 25, and a steam discharge conduit 24. Second steam discharge apertures are preferably formed in the free end of the stuffing- box 19. The free end of the stuffing-box 19 may be surrounded by a steam discharge conduit. The stuffing-box 19 and the injector nozzle 1 may be additionally heated. The inlet conduit 2 preferably has a diameter which is from 1.3 to 2.3 times as large as the thickness of the material to be treated. The diameter of the stuffing-box chamber 11 is preferably from 4.5 to 7.5 mm. The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the acceleration conduit 8 to the total cross-sectional area of the steam discharge apertures 25 is from 1:3 to 1:60.
