The compounds have the formula: (in which R1 and R2 are hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical, R3 and R4 are hydrogen or a phenyl or lower alkyl radical) such as 2-methyl-4-(4-tetrahydropyranyl)pyridine. They may be prepared by thermal dehydration of a 3-(4-pyridyl)-1,5-pentanediol, preferably using a catalyst, or by interaction of a 4-methyl pyridine with dichloroethylether, preferably using sodium amide. - The products are suitable as hardeners for epoxy resins, corrosion inhibitors, the polychloro derivatives as herbicides, the quaternary compounds as fungicides, bactericides, herbicides and acid corrosion inhibitors of steel.
