New benzamides of formula (I): (where R' and R2 = Me or Et; X and X' = H, Br, Cl, F, Me, Et or CF3, but only one may be H; Y = H, Br, Cl, F or Me; and n = 0-2) are fungicides and herbicides. - (I) are prepd. (a) by chlorination of (I) (n = 1, 2 or 3) or (b) hydrolysis of a cpd. of formula (II): - Thus a 7:3 mixture of N-(1,1-dimethyl-3,3-dichloro 3-chloro-acetonyl)-3,5-dichlorobenzamide (52g.) in CCl4 (52 ml.) was irradiated (UV) and treated with Cl2, cooled, filtered, and recryst. from PhH, giving the 3,3,3-trichloroacetonyl deriv. (14.5 g.; 42%), m.p. 144-144.5 degrees C.
