<p>1313644 Halogenated cyclopentadiene adducts of styrene HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP 21 May 1971 [29 June 1970 (2) 20 Aug 1970] 16356/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> may each be a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or a halogenated alkyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, the halogen being fluorine, chlorine or bromine; X may be fluorine, chlorine or bromine; each Y may be a chlorine, fluorine, or bromine atom, an alkyl radical having 1 to 10 carbon atoms or a halogenated alkyl radical having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, the halogen being chlorine, bromine or fluorine; each X<SP>1</SP> may be a chlorine or bromine atom and a is 4 or 5. The compounds may be prepared by (1) reacting a styrene derivative of the structure with a halogenated cyclopentadiene of the structure and (2) reacting the resulting product with a halogenating agent to produce from 1 to 5 halogen atoms on the aromatic ring, provided that when bromine is the halogen on the aromatic ring, only up to four bromine atoms may be substituted thereon. The compounds of the invention may be used as fire retarding agents in thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers and organic elastomers.</p> |
