FIELD: medicine. SUBSTANCE: present invention describes 3-cyanoandrosta-3,5-diene-17beta-carboxylic acid of formula given in the specification, used as intermediate product when preparing compounds of formula given in the specification wherein R is hydrogen, C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>6</SB>-alkyl substituted by at least one phenyl optionally having at least one substituent selected from substituents A; R is substituted C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>6</SB> alkyl having at least one substituent selected from phenyl, furyl, thienyl or diphenylamino; in this case phenyl group is substituted by at least one substituent selected from substituents A. Substituents A are selected from alkyl C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>6</SB> groups, alkoxy C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>6</SB> groups, hydroxy groups, halogen atoms or dialkyl C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>6</SB> amino groups; R is carboxy group, and also pharmaceutically acceptable salts and esters thereof. Said compounds have useful 5alpha-reductase activity and are therefor e useful for treatment and prophylaxis of prostatic hypertrophy and in addition to other diseases disorders caused by higher levels of 5alpha-dihydrotestosteron.
