An electrical transition arrangement between a low temperature and a normal conducting cable at a branch or junction point. The interior of the super conducting cable consists of an undulated copper tube which is coated with a niobium layer, and is linked to an external housing which is filled with mercury held at room temperature. The ends of two normal conducting cables are fed into the housing and make electrical contact with the mercury. The mercury which is in contact with the surface of the low temperature cable is activated by an additional copper layer, which is brushed on to a thickness of 3 to 10 microns, to produce a very low contact resistance.
