A device for measuring the clearance between the teeth of two helical gears, the gears driving the oil pump of an internal combustion engine mounted on the crank case. One driving gear has a pinion shaft with a slot for a dismountable connection to the oil pump. When the oil pump is removed, a plug-in shaft (1) is inserted into the pinion shaft (9) slot (8), by which the gears can be rotated within their clearance from the outside of the engine (12). A lever transmits this movement to a fixed dial gauge. In order to spread open and added piece (3), a screw threaded pin (6) is provided in the plug-in shaft (1).
