Chlorination of (a) perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid, its anhydride or bis-imides, (b) naphthalic acid, its anhydride or bis-imides, or (c) anthraquinone or its derivs. in ClSO3H, 70-100 wt.% H2SO4, or in oleum at 40-160 (pref. 50-130) degrees C., is catalysed by the presence of aromatic iodine cpds. The amount of aromatic iodine cpds. is pref. 1-15 (esp. 3-12) wt.%, based on the amount of cpd. to be chlorinated. USes Halogenated perylene tetracarboxylic acid anhydrides are dyes for natural or synthetic fibre textiles and plastics. Halogenation products of naphthalic acid and its imide and of anthraquinone and its derivs. are dye precursors.
