1397507 Fabric softener TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 28 Aug 1973 [20 Sept 1972] 40512/73 Heading D1P [Also in Division C2] A fabric softener comprises an aqueous dispersion containing 0.1 to 10% wt of wherein R 1 and R 2 are C10-30 secondary alkyl, R 3 is H, CH 3 or (CH 2 CH 2 O) 3 H, R 4 and R 5 are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, X is SO 4 or PO 4 and Z is equal to the valence of X. Specified compounds are: methyl di(C10-14 secondary alkyl) ammonium methyl sulphate, dimethyl di(C10-14 secondary alkyl) ammonium methyl sulphate, dimethyl di(C14-15 secondary alkyl) ammonium methyl sulphate, methyl monoethoxylated di(C10-14 secondary alkyl) ammonium methyl sulphate, methyl monoethoxylated di(C10-14 secondary alkyl) ammonium dimethyl phosphate, dimethyl di(C16-20 secondary alkyl) ammonium methyl sulphate, dimethyl di(C20-23 secondary alkyl) ammonium methyl sulphate, ethyl di- (C10-14 secondary alkyl) ammonium ethyl sulphate, methyl phenyl di(C10-14 secondary alkyl) ammonium diphenyl phosphate, methyl benzyl di(C10-14 secondary alkyl) ammonium dibenzyl phosphate. These compounds are made by reaction of a di(Secondary alkyl) amine with the appropriate di(alkyl aryl or aralkyl) ester. The alkoxylated derivatives are formed by reaction of the amine with alkylene oxide in the presence of SbCl 5 , BF 3 , p-toluene sulphonic acid, alkali wetted hydroxides, CH 3 ONa, C 2 H 5 ONa or Na. The fabric may contain cottons, polyester, nylon, viscose, acetate or polyacrylonitrile fibres. The softening composition may contain specified surfactants, e.g. alkyl phenoxypolyethoxyethanols, polyethoxyethanol derivitives, ethylene oxide -mercaptan or -alkylthiophenol derivatives, ethylene oxide acid derivatives, ethylene oxide-long chain alcohol or polyol derivatives, ethylene oxide-amine derivatives and ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block polymers. Viscosity modifiers, colourants, perfumes, anti-foaming agents may also be present in the softening composition. The softening composition may be applied by dipping, spraying, coating or padding.
