To increase the torque of the restoring force when the magnetic needle (4) is in an inclined position, caused by a vertical component of the earth's magnetic field, a hollow cylinder (5) is located underneath the magnetic needle (4). The point of gravity (S2) of the hollow cylinder (5) is farther away from the centre of rotation (3) than the point of gravity (S3) of the magnetic needle (4). This results in an additional force torque in order to reduce the inclined position of the magnetic needle. <IMAGE>
