A smoothing iron contains a baseplate (10) which terminates in a point at one end. The sole plate (10) has a front portion (12) and a rear portion (14). The front portion (12) is located in the region of the point. The smoothing iron can be operated in such a way that the front portion (12) forms an obtuse angle with the rear portion (14). For this purpose, the front portion (12) is connected to the rear portion (14) via a bending joint (22), a smooth transition between the portions (12, 14) occurring on the underside. The front portion (12) is held against a stop (28) by a compression spring (26) in a position in which the two portions (12, 14) lie in one plane. The front portion (12) can be locked in an angled position by means of a locking device (32). <IMAGE>
