The apparatus serves for the clamped mounting and twisting of a cylindrical workpiece, such as the shank of a screw tap, which is to be inscribed by means of a laser beam. It comprises clamping strips and at least one counter-clamping strip which, offset relative to each other in the axial direction of the workpiece, hold the latter clampingly on the circumference. Displacement of the strips relative to each other causes rolling of the shank. The strips can simultaneously hold and twist a plurality of workpieces, so that the handling time for a workpiece is reduced.
