When starting the engine, the inlet and outlet ports (10,11) may be shut off by the pistons (7,8). Reduced pressure in the combustion chamber (9) resists the springs (22) from pushing the piston rods (12,13) so that the sliding shoes (21) fail to maintain contact with the profiled swash plates (16-19). An additional inlet port (25) and valve (26) in each cylinder (5) allow air or gas to enter the chamber (9) under pressure to push the pistons (7,8) apart. Other modifications improve the lubrication of the swash plate sliding surfaces (18,19).
