A label comprising a colloidal particle having a spacer arm attached thereto and a primary specific binding member attached to the spacer arm. The colloidal particle is preferably formed from a polymeric material or from a metal sol. The spacer arm is preferably a biological linking group or a synthetic polymeric linking group. The primary specific binding member is preferably an antibody or an antigen. The label of this invention exhibits a dose-response curve that varies only slightly over a wide temperature range, e.g., 13 DEG C to 37 DEG C when used in immunochromatographic assay strips.
