The invention concerns electromagnetic wave detectors such as quantum well infrared detectors, consisting of elementary detectors. Each elementary detector has an elaborate mesa structure on a substrate and comprises a stack of guide layer (1), a lower layer (2), at least an active layer (3), an upper layer (4). The guide layer (1) refractive index is less than that of the other layers to confine the electromagnetic waves to be detected inside each mesa structure of the elementary detector. This elementary detector architecture reduces video crosstalk between elementary detectors. The invention is applicable to infrared imaging.
