A water transfer vessel (3) travels between a station (2) on the surface of the ocean and the ocean depths. The vessel (3) collects cool water from the ocean depths and brings the water to the surface. The station (2) has cool water and warm water (derived from the ocean surface) reservoirs (4, 16) which drive a thermodynamic heat engine. The output of a turbine (11) of the engine is stored as useful power. The thermodynamic heat engine and reservoirs may be located on the vessel. Warm exhaust water from the heat engine is discharged at the ocean depths. The invention provides for the generation of useful power from the thermal gradient of an ocean, sea or the like.
