The invention relates to a control device for program-controlled household appliances which contains an electronic processing unit having a program storage. To make it easier to use and vary stored program sequences at least parts of the program are stored in a chip (6) which is part of an external support element (6). At a place which is easily accessibly for the user the household appliance also has a locating device (5) which receives the support element (6) and has a read-out device for reading the data contained in the chip.
