The digital coding and decoding method has a signal simplification step (200), containing only the information. The signal is then coded (202) using a predetermined coding technique. The original signal is then subtracted from the simplified signal (204) leaving a residual signal. A coding technique (206) is selected from a set of coding techniques and the residual signal block is then coded with the coding technique (208).
