Continuously variable drive unit has input (4) and output shafts (5). Coupling these are two epicyclical gear trains (1, 2) and variable hydrostatic transmission (3). Transmission consists of two variable stroke hydrostatic units (3a, 3b) joined by hydraulic circuit (11), incorporating change over control valve (12). Transmission is capable of driving output shaft in direction corresponding to forward drive of vehicle and by changing over control valve (12), flow is reversed through hydraulic system, and unit acting as motor, drives vehicle in reverse direction.
