An automotive vehicle passenger restraint and protection system comprises a seatbelt, a powered seatbelt retractor and protractor, preferably a motor 10, and a seatbelt buckle attachment and detachment sensor 16. The control system 14, 15 includes a danger of collision detecting system 89 that preferably monitors the vehicles speed, operation of the brake pedal and steering wheel, and detects the ambient light level and presence of rain. When the seatbelt is detected to be attached (see figure 46) , the motor retracts the slack in the seatbelt and then protracts a small amount of the seatbelt to a specific looseness, so providing sufficient slack to aid the occupants comfort. If no danger is detected a first amount of slack is provided (fig 47), but if danger is detected, only a second smaller amount of slack is provided (fig 48). The amount of slack or looseness may be altered in response to one or more collision detection sensor outputs 90, 91, 92, 93 ,94 so as to increase the speed of retraction or reduce the amount of protraction if the danger indication has increased. |
