The invention relates to a method and novel vaccine strategies which can be used to enhance the immune response induced against the prion, to break the immune tolerance barrier and to protect vaccinated and/or treated individuals against the development of diseases caused by prions. The invention also relates to the development of novel formulations for use in the pharmaceutical industry, which are intended for prophylactic and/or therapeutic use. In addition, the aforementioned strategies are extremely useful in the development of reagent kits which facilitate the diagnosis of the disease.
