The generator has an electrolysis cell (1) with a gas-impermeable housing, which is locked by a gas-permeable diaphragm (2) for withdrawal of testing or calibration gas such as carbon monoxide (CO). A cathode (5) and an anode (4) are formed from a precious metal or from a mixture of precious metals or material containing carbon, where the cathode and the anode stay in direct contact with the electrolytes (7). The electrolyte contains a mesoxalic acid or a meso oxalate, and a control unit (6) serves as a power source, where the control unit is connected with the anode and the cathode.
