A missile (10) has fins (12) that rotate about a single axis to deploy from a stowed position to a deployed position. A foil longitudinal axis (24) of each fin (12) is angled relative to a shaft (28) of the fin, such that a single-axis rotation of the shaft (28) moves the foil (12) from the stowed position to a deployed position. A coil spring (36) may provide both torsion and compression forces to rotate the fin (12) into the deployed position and lock it into place. Torsion rotates the shaft (28) until it reaches a seat on a bushing (34) that is around the shaft (28). Then compression forces from the spring (36) engage a keyed protrusion (46) on the shaft (28) with a corresponding keyway (56) in the bushing (34), locking the shaft (28) in place. There may be an additional lock once the fin (12) is deployed, such as a spring-loaded pin (94) in the missile body (16) that engages a depression (51) in the shaft (28).
