PURPOSE:To obtain the subject base paper, capable of maintaining strong sizing effects, having excellent wettability with water imparted thereto and useful as coated paper, by using a specific modified starch as a starch for surface sizing. CONSTITUTION:The objective base paper obtained by respectively adjusting the surface contact angle and absorbency to <=105 deg. and <=27g/m<2> in cardboard having the surface treated with a size of a phosphate- or acetate-modified tapioca starch or potato starch. Furthermore, the afore-mentioned modified starch is further preferably thermally gelatinized and modified with alpha-amylase or thermochemically gelatinized and modified with an acid for use and the substitution degrees of the disphosphating and acetating are respectively preferably 0.00005-0.0015 and 0.01-0.1. |
