A vortex shedding flowmeter senses the generation of vortices by measuring the torsional displacement of a bluff body (12) mounted for rotation about its centre of inertia (14) within a fluid conduit. An internally toothed member (24) is fixed to the outside of the fluid conduit, and an externally toothed member (20) is fixed to the bluff body (12) for rotation therewith and is in partial meshing relation with the externally toothed member. An optical fibre (30) is entrained between the toothed members (20, 24) and has one end exposed to a light source (32) and the opposite end connected to a detector (34) which is operable to detect changes in the intensity of the light transmitted through the fibre. As the bluff body (12) vibrates, the toothed members (20, 24) are displaced relative to one another causing changes in the radius of curvature of the segments of the optical fibre (30) received between teeth (26, 28) of the toothed members, thus changing the intensity of light transmitted through the fibre in proportion to the changes in the radius of curvature.
|
