5-Phenyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-ones Title cpds. of formula (I) (where R1 is H or lower alkyl and R2 and R3 are H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, haloalkyl, NO2 or lower alkylsulphonyl) and their salts, which are useful as tranquilizers, muscle relaxants spasmolytics and hypnotics, are prepd. by treating an indole deriv. (II) with an oxidizing agent (pref. chromic acid or ozone) and reacting the resulting benzophenone deriv. (III) with an acid in acidic medium (pref. with HC1 or HBr in CH3COOH); the resulting salt of (I) may be converted to the free base.
