1,247,996. Spot welding. GILLETTE CO. 11 Aug., 1969 [9 Sept., 1968], No. 40096/69. Heading B3R. A machine 10 for welding together the overlapped ends of two thin metal strips comprises a fixed strip holding platen 50, a strip holding movable platen 52, a rotatable lower welding roller 90, an upper rotatable welding roller 108, an air-actuated piston 124 for moving roller 108, a platen support 16 movable along guides 20, by a lead-screw 24, and means 42 for indexing the lead-screw so that support 16, along with the metal strips, is moved incrementally through welding rollers 108, 90. Lead-screw 24 cooperates with a nut 26 secured to support 16 and is adapted to be disengaged therefrom to provide for rapid movement of the support by a quick release device 28. The lead-screw is indexed by a motor 40 which drives a sprocket 44 on the screw through a Geneva mechanism 36, a sprocket 32, and a chain 42. Platen 52 is guided so as to move towards fixed platen 50 and place metal strip (134) on top of strip (132), Fig. 4 (not shown), by levers 54, 55, and 57, 58, and such movement is produced by a handle 65. Each platen has a strip guide 66, 68, and the strips are held on the platens by vacuum ports 76, 84. Lower copper-tungsten alloy welding roller 90 is connected to a power source, is carried on a support 96 having a height-adjusting means 98, and is driven by a motor 105 through a chain 106. Upper copper-tungsten roller 108 is connected to a power source, and is carried by a support 130. In welding two sheets (132), (134), Fig. 4 (not shown), of razor blade stock 0À0015 inch thick and 6 inches wide made of stainless steel with principal metallurgical components of iron, carbon 0À4%, and chromium 13À5%, the ends of the stock are squared off and aligned with guides 66, 68, Fig. 2. A stop 135, Fig. 3, hinged to platen 50, and having an arm 136 positions the lateral sides of the strip. After alignment the stock is clamped to the respective platens, by vacuum and, if desired, by auxiliary clamps, and platen 52 is moved so that sheet (134) overlaps sheet (132). Nut 26 is engaged with lead-screw 24, upper roller 108 is lowered, motor 105 is actuated, and a series of overlapping spot welds of generally circular configuration are provided. |
