A metallurgical furnace bottom includes a lining of graphite bricks, an outer cladding wall and between the two, a layer of a metal, or alloy, of thermal conductivity not less than that of the graphite lining. Cast layers of 10-20 mm. thickness of aluminium, iron, copper, lead, tin, Babbitts metal, brass, bronze or nickel/ copper alloy are preferred, the space to be filled being subdivided into sections by graphite strips. The graphite bricks may be plated or spray coated with a thin metal, or alloy, or silicide or carbide layer, to improve their wettability, prior to the casting of the main metal or alloy layer. |
