1367194 Curable acrylic amide compositions LUBRIZOL CORP 2 May 1972 [10 May 1971 20 Dec 1971 7 March 1972] 20395/72 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A substituted acrylamide of the formula wherein each of R6 and R7 is H or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical, R8 is H, halogen or an optionally substituted alkyl radical having up to 7 carbon atoms, and each R9 is H or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical, at least one R9 being H, is reacted with an aliphatic aldehyde having up to 4 carbon atoms, or with a reversible polymer of the aldehyde, in the presence of an alkaline reagent in a diluent comprising (1) water and/or (2) an organic liquid which is a solvent for the reactants or the reaction product or both. The reaction product, which is water-soluble, is stated to comprise hydroxyalkylated derivatives of the substituted acrylamide as well as dimers and trimers thereof obtained by condensation of the hydroxyalkyl groups; also where the diluent comprises an alcohol etherification of the hydroxyalkyl groups is effected. Preferred substituted acrylamide reactants are diacetone acrylamide (N-[1,1-dimethyl-3-oxobutyl]-acrylamide), and diacetophenone, acrylamide (N- [1,3 - diphenyl - 1 - methyl - 3 - oxopropyl]- acrylamide). The aldehyde reactant is preferably formaldehyde (or a polymer thereof such as paraformaldehyde or trioxane).
