<p>1300862 Carbon black PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 30 Jane 1970 [31 Jan 1969] 4636/70 Heading C1A In the preparation of carbon black by decomposing a hydrocarbon feed in a reaction zone, there is added to the zone an additive which modifies one or more properties of the carbon black produced, this additive is introduced into the zone at a temp. above its m.p. and is a mixture of at least two compounds, both of which are solid at room temperature, and which together or individually have the desired modifying effect, said mixture being such that its m.p. is less than those of its individual components. The additive preferably modifies the structure of the black, and is such that at least one component, preferably at least two components, are capable when each is used alone, of modifying the structure of the carbon black. The property modifying components may be alkali metal having an atomic no. of at least 19 or compounds of such alkali metals, e.g. oxides of Na or K; or salts of Na or K with nitric acid or nitrous acid. Thus the mixture may contain two or more of KNO 3 , KNO 2 , NaNO 3 and NaNO 2 . The mixture preferably has a m.p. less than 600‹ F. The mixture may be added e.g. in the form of an aqueous solution to the hydrocarbon feed which is heated to the desired temp. before introduction to the reaction zone.</p> |
