At least one representative of an olefin containing at least two of the species a) polymeric unsaturated hydrocarbons having a mol.wt. >=300 and contg. >=6 olefinic double bonds, b) cyclic unsatd. hydrocarbons and c) non-cyclic unsatd. hydrocarbon is contacted in solution with at least one organometallic catalyst, the metal being chosen from groups IIA, IIB, IIIA or IIIB of the periodic table and at least one salt of Mo, W, Nb, Ta, Re, Ru, Os, Ir, Sn, La, Hf, Zr, Mn, V, Cr, Rh or Pd, to cause transfer of groups on the double bonds i.e. etc.
