Illumination of an original in a magnifying apparatus for exposing light-sensitive material is carried out with a sequence of light flashes of which the number of flashes corresponds to the quantity of light required for exposure. Apparatus comprises a HT flash discharge tube with means for controlling the number of flashes, and may be used for reverse illumination of the light field of a support for the original. This support may be used for small-format originals and mounted removably on the support for the original in a large-format process camera. The flash tube may be exchanged for a focussing lamp, and both may be mounted on a removable carriage. The flash tube may be provided with a diffuse reflector.
