The rope winch launches model gliders at a suitable height to take advantage of thermal currents. The winch speed is steplessly adjusted, independently of the size or weight of the glider or of wind conditions. The winch drum can be driven by toothed belt from an internal-combustion engine with a smooth rate of acceleration. There can be an electromagnetic coupling between engine and winch, to give a smooth start and rapid uncoupling in an emergency. A solenoid-operated brake can also be included, and the rope can be accurately wound onto the drum via a fairlead.
|
