PURPOSE:To read postal code numbers at unfixed positions by forming a mask for every character from a pattern signal obtained by scanning a prescribed area optically, and putting respective masks in blocks according to their lines and pitches and discriminating and segmenting only characters. CONSTITUTION:The 1st scanning part 11 scans in a visual field on postal matter P and then performs photoelectric conversion to obtain a pattern signal. From the pattern signal, a character line detection part 12 forms an X and an Y mask by projection in directions X and Y to select a block of masks suitable as address information from each line signal extracted by the mask signals, and then sends it to the 2nd scanning part 13. The 2nd scanning part 13 scans the selected block and performs photoelectric conversion to obtain a pattern signal, which is sent to a character detecting and segmenting device 14. This device 14 discriminates numbers, KANJI (Chinese character), and postal marks, with every block, to select only the numbers, which are sent to a character recognition part 15, where they are discriminated by being compared with reference number patterns. Thus, postal code numbers at unfixed positions are extracted and read. |
