The present invention relates to a method for working in quarries of dressed stone and the like, and a machine for its implementation. According to the invention, the following operations are carried out successively : a first sawing 20 is carried out in the form of parallel, vertical cuts which are spaced apart by the length of one dimension of the block to be obtained, at least one horizontal sawing 25 is carried out, the depth of which corresponds substantially to the depth of the vertical saw cuts, over the whole width of the working face of the bed which has been covered by the vertical sawings, a block-supporting member is inserted into the highest slit determined by this second sawing in order to support the block or blocks at the time of its or their detachment, and a vertical sawing 31 is carried out parallel to the working face at a distance from this working face which is equal to the third dimension of the block to be obtained, the block or blocks are then removed after they have been fully detached. With the method, the tradable product is directly produced by sawing of the bed. <IMAGE>
