PURPOSE:To orient a liquid crystal molecule without disturbing a layer structure, by forming an oriented film by performing the rubbing to a high surface active inorganic thin film which is formed by an ion plating method. CONSTITUTION:The titled display element is constituted by enclosing a ferroelectric liquid crystal 3 between two pieces of opposed glass substrates 2 with an electrode, provided with an electrode pattern consisting of a transparent electrode on at least one of them. Also, an oriented film 4 formed on the glass substrate 2 provided with the electrode pattern 1 consists of that which has performed a rubbing processing to a thin film consisting of an inorganic compound having a strong surface polarity, formed by an ion plating method. In such a way, the ferroelectric liquid crystal 3 can be oriented without disturbing a layer structure, and a display element whose spontaneous polarization is large, whose response is quick, and also, whose memory effect is stable can be obtained. |
