PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an active ingredient of a herbicide in shortened process and high purity and yield without using thionyl chloride, by reacting phenols with chlorocarboxylic anilide in the presence of a deacidifying agent. CONSTITUTION:Compounds of phenols expressed by formula I (X is halogen or lower alkyl; n is 0-5; X may be same or different, when n is >=2) are reacted with chlorocarboxylic anilide. The reaction is carried out using a deacidifying agent such as potassium carbonate, etc., in a solvent such as toluene, etc., at 50 deg.C - reflux temperature for 3-24hr to provide the aimed compound expressed by formula II. The compounds expressed by formula I are used in an amount of 0.8-1.5mol based on the compound expressed by formula II and the deacidifying agent is used in an amount of 0.5-5mol per 1mol of the compound expressed by formula II.
