PURPOSE:To reproduce a picture of high quality and high definition by detecting the direction of an edge from picture data and deciding the distribution quantity of error added to the picture data based on the detected result. CONSTITUTION:The picture data of an original read in an input sensor part 1 is transmitted to an A/D converter 2 and quantized into the data having gradiations of 256 levels. Next, in a correction circuit 3 the process such as a shading correction, etc., is executed to the data and the data 100, where the correction process is completed, is supplied to an error correction circuit 5 and an edge detection circuit 4. The circuit 4 calculates the direction of the edge and edge quantity and transmits the edge data 200 to the circuit 5. The circuit 5 executes weighting in terms of the error data 500 supplied from an error computation circuit 7 with the data 200 so as to add to the data 100 from the circuit 3 and supplies the error correction data 300 to a binary circuit 6. Thus, the picture of high quality and high definition can be reproduced.
