PURPOSE:To obtain a low temperature hydrogen and carbon monoxide gas for use in the cementation of gear, bearing, etc., by subjecting hydrocarbon such as butane to partial oxidation at a low temperature using a catalyst which is prepared by depositing Zr and Ni and/or Co on the support consisting of MgAl2O4 spinel and/or MgO. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst is prepared by depositing on the support consisting of MgAl2O4 spinel of not less than 70mol% and/or MgO of not more than 30mol% Zr of 0.05-12wt.% and Ni and/or Co of 2-12wt.% based on said support. This catalyst is filled in a quartz pipe, into which a mixture of butane and air is passed at a temperature of about 930 deg.C, whereby H2 and Co can be formed together with a trace amount of CH4 and a slight amount of Co2. The subject catalyst remains almost unchanged after being used for several hours. Even at a low temperature reaction, a low temperature gas (about 900 deg.C) advantageous for cementation can be obtained, the deposition of carbons on the catalyst being unobserved. |
