Apparatus and a device for monitoring fluid which is substantially transparent t o at least one frequency of light, which utilizes an impeller, ¢which in a preferr ed embodiment is a helical screw! located within a passage or conduit, to break a b eam of light passing through the fluid as the impeller is turned by the flow of fluid. A light sensor is further provided to count the number of time the beam is broken within a certain time frame, thereby allowing the rate of flow to be calculated from a calibratio n of the number of turns of the impeller in relation to the rate of fluid flow through th e conduit.
