PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound, convertible into a compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for vitamins under a lower pressure than that in a conventional method by reacting a 3,4-diacyloxy-1-butene with H and CO in the presence of a specific monodentate tertiary organophosphorus compound. SOLUTION: A compound represented by formula I (R is a 1-6C alkyl), e.g. 3,4-diacetoxy-1-butene is reacted with H and CO in the presence of an Rh catalyst having a hydroformylating catalytic ability, e.g. Rh4 (CO)12 at preferably 0.001-1 mg atom/L, more preferably 0.01-0.25 mg atom/L concentration in the reactional solution expressed in terms of Rh atoms in the presence of a monodentate tertiary organophosphorus compound having 2,080-2,090 cm<-1> electronic parameter and 150-180 deg. steric parameter at a temperature within the range of usually 20-150 deg.C under a reactional pressure within the range of 30-250 atm to afford a compound represented by formula II. The amount of the organophosphorus compound used is preferably 2-10 mmol/L expressed in terms of concentration in the reactional solution at a molar ratio of H/CO within the range of usually (1/5) to (5/1). |
