PURPOSE:To make the response of a semiconductor light emitting element faster and to highly efficiently couple optical fibers by providing a plated layer which covers a section corresponding to a light emitting section and a peripheral section which does not emit light and has a bridge section connecting the light emitting section and the no-light emitting section, which are isolated from each other by means of a groove on a P-side electrode. CONSTITUTION:This semiconductor light emitting element is constituted by successively forming an insulating film 6 which is provided on a p-type contact layer 5 except a light emitting section, p-side electrode 7 which is provided on the film 6 and joined to the layer 5 only in the light emitting section, and plated layer 8 which is provided on the p-side electrode, covers the section corresponding to the light emitting section and no-light emitting peripheral section and has a bridge section connecting the light and no-light emitting sections to each other, and has a notched section facing a groove 22 on the p-type contact layer 5. Since the p-n junction is discontinued by the groove 22, the junction capacity of the p-n junction is reduced to the ratio of the area of the light emitting section to all junction area and, as a result, the element capacity is sharply reduced. Therefore, a surface-emitting or edge emitting type emitting element which is improved in responding speed and coupling efficiency is obtained. |
