PURPOSE: To obtain a producing method of such a high-density magnetic recording medium that although the medium is a coating type one, it not only gives a high frequency range output comparable to a vapor deposition tape but has traveling durability and storage property. CONSTITUTION: Each of a coating liquid for a lower nonmagnetic layer containing a nonmagnetic powder and a binder and a coating liquid for an upper magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder is prepared, and the prepared liquids are applied on a flexible supporting body. The coating liquid for a lower nonmagnetic layer shows thixotropy and is first applied on a flexible supporting body. The coating liquid for an upper magnetic layer is applied while the lower nonmagnetic layer thus formed is in a wet state, or at the same time when the coating liquid for the lower nonmagnetic layer is applied, or successively after that. The average dry film thickness d of the upper magnetic layer is specified to <=1.0μm and the average thickness fluctuationΔd on the interface between the upper magnetic layer and the lower nonmagnetic layer after dried is in the relation ofΔd<=0.50d.
