PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material composition suitable for a friction material which prevents or reduces brake judders (high-speed/high-temperature judders) at braking in high-speed driving, exerts an excellent braking property and prevents or reduces brake squeals, and a friction material using this friction material composition. SOLUTION: A friction material composition contains one or more inorganic grinders having a Mohs hardness of from 5 to 7 and one or more inorganic fibers having a Mohs hardness of from 4.5 to 6.5, wherein the proportion of the inorganic grinder is from 30 to 70 wt.% against the total weight of the inorganic grinder and the inorganic fiber. A friction material is prepared by heat-pressure forming the friction material composition and integrating a friction member and a back plate.
