A sterilizer comprises chamber (1) with baskets (3) to hold the substances (4) to be sterilized, such as food or pharmaceutical products, and incorporates an ultrasound vibrator (5) to agitate the products during the sterilizing process, e.g. by steam or hot water. The baskets can be separated by shock-absorbing walls (9). In a variant the agitation can be provided by a vibrating support or belt.
