PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized and inexpensive current applying thermal transfer printer in which highly precise characters and clear full color images can be printed at a higher speed and a lower cost, wastes are not generated at all, and almost all the commercially available printable hard copy media can be used. SOLUTION: A current applying head 10 includes an electrically insulating plate 10a having a top face to be adjacently in contact with the surface of the resistor layer 18c of a gravure endless ribbon 18, a radiating plate 10c having a thickness corresponding to that of a partition wall 18a', and a large number of signal electrodes 10b embedded in the plate 10a, arranged opposite to the radiating plates 10c and separated therefrom by a distance corresponding to almost a half dimension of a gravure cell 18a such that the respective top faces of the electrodes 10b can slidably be in contact with the surface of the resistor layer 18c. The signal electrodes 10b are arranged opposite to the respective gravure cells 18a in the forward position in the running direction of the gravure endless ribbon 18 with respect to the radiating plate 10c.
