The system (20) has a dispensing needle and a coating applicator (22) with a cylinder-and piston arrangement, which stands in fluid connection with a fluid standing under pressure and a coating material. A control device is actuated to supply a chain of electrical impulses to a solenoid valve (140). Each impulse acts such that the solenoid valve provides the fluid on a piston, so that a needle valve is opened and the coating material leaves the needle valve. The needle valve is closed for time intervals between impulses, and the coating material is discharged from the dispensing needle. An independent claim is also included for a method for automatic delivery of a coating material on a substrate.
