Provided is a device for detecting spatial information by using an intensity-modulated light on the basis of the intensity of the light reflected from a target space. The device is equipped with a timing synchronizing circuit for synchronizing the phase of the intensity-modulated light generated by a light emitting element and the timing, at which a light receiving element for receiving the intensity-modulated light is operated. The light receiving element is so operated as to detect the light receiving intensity at each of phase sections for one period of the intensity-modulated light, and the timing synchronizing circuit functions to compare the periodic fluctuation for determining the action of that light receiving element and the periodic fluctuation accompanying the outputting of the drive circuit of the light emitting element, so that the phase difference from both the periodic fluctuations may take a constant value.
