<p>A method and apparatus are disclosed for charging an internal battery of a topical negative pressure (TNP) system. The method includes the steps of determining a value of current required by a TNP system, comparing the required current value with a predetermined current value and setting a resistance provided by a variable resistance element responsive to the comparison to thereby supply unrequired current as battery charging current to an internal battery of the TNP system.</p>
